Encaustic, “to heat or burn in,” is an ancient painting technique dating back to the Greeks. Heat is used throughout the process to fuse layers of beeswax. Seductive and sensuous, the encaustic medium offers many levels of exploration for both seasoned artists and newcomers. This upcoming workshop includes using my extensive collection of Tjaps (Indonesian stamps used in Batik-making) and wood blocks to create beautiful patterns.
What to Bring: Prepared panels/supports to work on: 6” x 6”, 8” x 8”, 8” x 10”, your favorite colors of encaustic paints, medium, and bristle brushes (one for each color) -- no synthetic. You may glue paper, use encaustic gesso, or purchase prepared encaustic panels/cradles, rags, paper towels.
Materials can be purchased online or area art stores: Flax in Oakland, Dick Blick in Berkeley or Oakland.
